Why FJCU English?

大二Willson (陳昱翰)

Hi, my name is Willson. As a sophomore from the Department of English Language and Literature at Fu Jen Catholic University, I have to say that I have had a really fulfilling life during the past two years. Before entering the English Department, I was just a normal high school graduate, feeling insecure about my future and not even knowing anything about Shakespeare. Fortunately, I got admitted to the English Department at FJCU, which was the key turning point of my life. Not only does the English Department teach me English, it also helps us build confidence, find our life goals, and cultivate literary literacy. Also, all of the professors in our department are very friendly and approachable. If students have any difficulties or problems in their lives, they are always welcome to schedule a meeting with the professors. This kind of teaching environment helps me a lot. I have become more confident speaking English, and I get to know more about some famous and influential writers’ or artists’ thoughts and theories in Western civilization.

Besides the changes I have experienced, there are two significant things I’ve learned from my time in the department. The first and the most important takeaway is “time management.” Despite having a lot of free time in college, it doesn’t mean that you can veg out through the whole semester. Instead, you should learn how to be self-disciplined and manage your time so that you will be able to complete all the assignments on time; then you don’t have to worry about failing the courses. To be clear, I’m not saying that you can’t have time to have fun, but you have to schedule time for both studying and playing. The other key takeaway is “teamwork.” There are many courses and assignments in our department that require students to work together to produce a project or even an essay. Thus, it is quite important for us to learn how to cooperate with each other and prioritize team interests before individual interests.

Speaking of teamwork, there is one interesting course called TESOL & Cross-Cultural Communication. This is a project-based course, offering students elementary school teaching experiences by participating in TESOL-based service-learning projects with the component of cross-cultural communication for intercultural learning. For me, this whole course and teaching experience are really meaningful. I have never cooperated with so many people to produce a lesson plan before. To be honest, I thought it would be a disaster at first. However, it turned out that the results went quite well, and the elementary school students were really happy, too. I am grateful to have these wonderful team members to teach me, and I wouldn’t have done it perfectly if I hadn't had their assistance. Also, as a student teacher, I felt that I learned a lot from these service-learning projects. I believe that I am able to combine what I learned into my future career.

Finally, for those who are still unsure about joining our English Department, I would say that if you join our department, you can unlock a world of creativity, literature, and opportunities for becoming a confident English speaker. Whether you dream of teaching, writing, traveling the world, or simply want to improve your English abilities, our department is a perfect place to begin. Step into a world where every word matters—your journey starts here.
