Application materials required:
  1. Materials required by the University: Please refer to the Admission Brochure or Office of International Education: Required Documents.
  2. Additional documents required:
    1. The applicant must submit a letter written or typed in English. The letter should explain the applicant’s goals and values in pursuing a college education, articulate the motivation and significance of studying English Language and Literature, specify the reasons for applying to this department, list courses of particular interest, and outline future plans. Applicants are also welcome to include any questions they may have about the program. Most importantly, the letter must be written by the applicant personally.
    2. Official academic transcripts, in English, from all previously attended secondary schools.
    3. A certificate of English proficiency equivalent to Level B1 or above of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
    4. Chinese proficiency certificate or statement (optional)
Admission Evaluation:

Two-stage evaluation

  1. Material Review
  2. Written exam and/or oral interview in English (at the discretion of the exam committee; in person or via telephone or video conference)
Applicants who pass the first-stage document review will be notified separately by the department of the schedule for the English written examination and/or oral interview. Please be sure to provide a phone number and an email address at which you can be reached during daytime hours (Taiwan time).
Remarks:
  • The primary language of instruction in this department is English. Some elective courses, such as those related to translation, may be conducted in both Chinese and English, depending on the nature of the course. All faculty members are proficient in English and capable of conducting instruction and academic communication in English.
  • Fu Jen Catholic University’s Center of Chinese Language and Culture offers fee-based Mandarin courses. In addition, the International Student Center provides free evening Mandarin courses for international students for up to six hours per week and arranges Mandarin language partners for international degree-seeking students. These resources are designed to enhance students’ Mandarin literacy and communicative competence.
  • The undergraduate program features English-medium instruction throughout, a well-structured and comprehensive curriculum, and three major categories of advanced courses with substantial flexibility in elective selection. The program emphasizes interdisciplinary learning, social engagement, and cross-cultural communication.
