Dear Alumni,
Warmest greetings from the FJU English Department. I am glad to share with you some updates of our alumni.
Greetings from Ireland, USA, and Germany:
George Hsieh謝志賢(BA 2002, MA 2005) is now in his third year at UCD, Dublin and has been busy during this summer. He went to Prague in June to present a paper in the International Joyce Symposium, then back to Dublin for Dublin Joyce Summer School. Afterwards, he travelled with two friends to the West Ireland for a week. Back to Dublin, his supervisor asked him to write a review about Dublin Joyce Summer School he attended, which is to be published in James Joyce Literary Supplement. In February 2011, George is going to Rome for a post-graduate conference and maybe Trieste or Zurich in the summer for summer school or workshop. We hope that he can get the funding to make these trips.
Besides working as a freelance translator for some pocket money, George Hsieh has been translating Joyce’ Dubliners which will be published by the Bookman Bookstore in Taiwan. Now he has finished translating the fourth story. Go! Go! Go! We look forward to its publication in the near future.

Diana Lee李孟璇
In New York, Diana Lee 李孟璇(BA1999) has been working hard to enrich her website, AsianinNY.com, which is the New York’s leader in Asian networking and a multi-cultural sharing site. Since its establishment 2 years ago, it has received a lot of media attention as well as new members. Through the site, Diana has held special events and celebrations during Lunar Year, Chinese Valentine, Moon Festival and so on to bring Asians together and introduce Chinese/Taiwanese culture to non-Asians. Also, she has used the site to help to create networking and job opportunities. Most importantly, a lot of talented Asian artists and entertainers who have performed in those events have received a lot of booking opportunities and media coverage. Well-done, Diana.

Chris Wu 吳塵軒 (BA 2002, MA 2006) is currently studying for his Ph.D. at the University of Memphis, Tennessee, USA. The school has intensive courses of Afro-American literature and Memphis is a good location to delve into blues, which is the subject of his thesis. Over there he has taken several interesting and inspiring courses; they were seminars on Amiri Baraka, Frederick Douglass, Black Arts Movement and African American Literature from 1989 to Present. This fall he is taking African American Literature 1930-60 in which the class focuses on black protest literature during the time frame, exemplified by Richard Wright's novel Native Son, from which he has come up with a tentative approach about his dissertation. Good to know he is doing well and two of his essays will be published in two issues in a special edition of a literary journal, Black Magnolias, under the editorship in the department to be published in March 2011. We wish you all the best for a smooth writing of your dissertation, Chris.

In the American South, another alumna is studying at the University of Mississippi. After graduating from Fu Jen, Sandy Kao (MA 1999) was an instructor in the Applied English Department at Shih Chien University, Kaohsiung Campus, for several years. In the summer of 2006, she went to Oxford, MS with her family to pursue a doctoral degree in Higher Education Personnel Administrative at the University of Mississippi, where the story of "The Blind Side" takes place. Now she is a doctoral candidate and works on her proposal. She plans to complete her dissertation in 2011. We wish her good luck!

Now, let’s move a bit to the American southwest. Sherry Shen 沈倩宇 (BA2002) is now studying for the Master of Public Health at the University of Arizona, Tucson. She appreciates “the critical thinking, as well as the English language foundation” she has acquired from the FJU English Department, especially in writing, as MPH degree demands good writing skills. She also took one more writing course while in the US. Speaking of her switching from English to Public Health--the social justice concept, she states that, she was “originally inspired from reading some feminist thoughts/readings back at Fu Jen, and now finding an opportunity to potentially apply it in the field of public health,” that seems to be quite natural to her. In the "Family Violence" course, taught by a famous researcher, Dr. Mary Koss (she's one of the reasons Sherry chose UA program), Sherry works as a TA and learns a great deal from her mentor.
One particular course she’s taken was Service Learning (SL). “The concept of SL is really to incorporate what we learn in the textbooks and theories and apply and experience it in actual life.” So they visited many local health and social services agencies that serve urban American Indian population, homeless population, County public health department, Juvenile Court, Sexual Prevention Non-profit organization, among others. They learn about the services and programs offered by each agency, and try to discuss what other services these agencies need (because they will potentially be designing future public health programs in the needed agencies), as well as think about what the barriers to these agencies are, or the population who uses these agencies, to improve health and living conditions. To serve and help create a sound public health environment is a very significant mission. Sherry has found the area of her interests since she moved to Tucson, and will like to continue to explore this field, although she is not definitely sure whether this will be her internship focus yet. Bless you, Sherry, for what you are doing.
Now living in Düsseldorf, Germany, Michelle Wang 王詩情 (BA 2003) studied one year in documentary production in Strasbourg, then transferred to University Sorbonne-Panthéon and did her master's thesis in the section of Cultural Studies. The defense is taking place this month.? We wish her good luck!
While in Strasbourg, Michelle did some documentary films on instituted midwife system in France. In Paris she was unofficially engaged in helping several Chinese film directors with finding funds.?
At present, she is collecting data for a book on food and people who are constantly crossing borders (immigrants, foreign students, Alsaciens on the Franco-German border) before going back to Asia this fall. We’d love to see her when she is in Taiwan!

Gary Hsieh謝侑格 |
After graduating from Fu Jen, Gary 謝侑格 (BA 2003) took art courses in London for almost one year. In Saint Martin College of Art and Design, he took a summer course and also a foundation course in Chelsea College of Art, majoring in visual communication and costume design. Both were great experience for him, and he enjoyed his stay in the UK a lot. Soon after he came back to Taiwan, he worked in Jazz image on Taipei 101 observatory! He took photos for visitors and used photoshop to edit their photo onto the Taipei 101 background. Special effects create the images as if they were climbing onto the pole of Taipei 101 tower! What a fun job, but it also keeps him very busy. In May, Gary just quit his job and is now travelling in NYC. He wants to give himself some time to rest and ponder what to do next. We hope he feels refreshed and recharged after he gets back.
Looking forward to some changes in life
Sarah Kuo郭曉芸 (BA 2006) is now working in Shanghai with Euromonitor International, a market survey company. She just got settled in Shanghai about two months and is trying to get familiar with the city. From the same class, Alice Wei 魏如萱 received her Master of Information Science from Indian University, Bloomington in 2008. After working as an Application Programmer in ProCure Treatment Centers for about two years, now she started to work at home this summer.

Christina Jey 接亦凡 |
(with Jolin) |
Christina Jey 接亦凡 (BA 2003) is now working in an Internet OEM (i.e. Original Equipment Manufacturing) factory. Her main job is to find a stream of potential clients and customers abroad. Thus, attending exhibitions and trade shows abroad becomes a highly cost-effective way of testing overseas markets. Exhibitions allow her to investigate the needs of customers in her target overseas market and gather feedback on the products. Sometimes she could get customers placing orders on the spot if they were sufficiently interested in what her business had to offer. At the very least, she could go away from an exhibition with some promising leads and useful contacts. Christina feels very much pressured in finding new customers as the business is more and more competitive nowadays. Finding customers is the hardest thing for many new and established business owners. She hopes that she can keep all the present customers happy.

Tobey Hsieh 謝蕙遠 (BA 2002) is now working for China Life Insurance Company. This is her first and only job so far. She has been with the company for almost 7 years now. She is now an assistant manager and hopes she can be a manager some day.
After five years in the dancing business, Jennifer Chang張文易 (BA2006) hurt her lower back and knees seriously due to overuse. She had quit dancing for two years, and had been an English teacher in a private high school for one year. Feeling the urge of self-improvement, she is now preparing for the graduate school entrance exam next year, aiming at majoring in interpretation. Her life is pretty good now; she exercises a lot, doing yoga and swimming, hoping to cure her backache. She studies in the day time and join Toastmaster regularly. She even holds a study group with Zeas Chen and Christina Chen, discussing English Literature once a week, just like what they did at Fu Jen. They enjoy reading now, and she thinks she is far more studious than ever. If the condition of her back is getting better, she will start dancing next year, but she won't earn her living by being a dancer anymore.

Remember Judy Peng 彭桂玲, our secretary, who had been with us for about thirteen years or so, got married and left for California in July 2008 to lead a new life.? She gave birth to a son this summer! Words from her:
“It's never too late to share the great news with you! We are joyful to announce that our precious baby Lucas Huang was born at 1:54 p.m. on Saturday, July 24, 2010. He was 5 lbs 10 oz and 19 inches tall. We are very happy to welcome him to join our family.”

My invitation for our 12/4 Alumni Homecoming at 14:00 ~17:00 pm
I believe God works through every one of you in every small act of kindness, and each encouraging word that brightens someone's day. Your encouragement reveals God's love to others. In this great big world, you make a difference. I also believe that you are extending our educational influence beyond classrooms into our wider social contexts. I'm so thankful that we once walked together and shared some life experiences. I pray that God multiplies back to you the blessing you are, many times over.
If you missed our alumni reunion in the past, please make sure that you don’t miss the upcoming Alumni Homecoming on Dec. 4 this year.? I look forward to seeing you (and your family)!
Sincerely,
Cecilia H. C. Liu
