本詩首先用否定的方式描寫愛情，說明怎樣的愛不是愛：
Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove.
然後莎士比亞用肯定的方式，運用意象，寫出了愛情的定義：
...it is an ever-fixed mark,
That looks on tempests and is never shaken;
It is the star to every wandering bark,
Whose worth's unknown, although hs height be taken.
第三節裏，詩人繼續運用意象，引述時空觀念，反覆說明愛情之永恆性。
最後詩人以堅定的語氣向人們挑戰，要大家提出事實，證明他的說法不對：
If this be error and upon me proved,
I never writ, nor no man ever loved.
