After Great Pain a Formal Feeling Comes

Poem 341

After great pain a formal feeling comes-

The nerves sit ceremonious like tombs

The stiff heart questions-was it He that bore?

And yesterday-or centuries before?

The feet, mechanical, go round

A wooden way

5

Of ground, or air, or ought,

Regardless grown,

A quartz contentment, like a stone

That is the hour of lead

Remembered if outlived,

10

As freezing persons recollect the snow-

First chill, then stupor then letting go.

Annotation

1

formal feeling

2

The nerves sit ceremonious like tombs

3

The stiff heart-

was it He that bore?

他(He)指的是Jesus Christ。

5

mechanical

5-6

 go round. A wooden way

6

 ought

8

Regardless grown

9

A quartz contentment

10

the hour of lead

11

Remembered if outlived

12

freezing persons

13

chill

stupor

letting go
