Endgame ( Fin de Partie )

 

1.  What is the word "Endgame" meant to you? Is it an end of the world or life?  Is there no way out at all to you and me?  What do you think of the title of the play?

2.  Do you think or believe that there is really no way out for human beings/or Hamm ? 

3.  After reading this play, please try to discuss: Is it possible for a human being to be able to exist independent of the enclosed space ( like Hamm living in the house)?  Could we perceive of the so-called self without understanding the origin or where we come from?

4.  What are the function of the "brief tableau" in the beginning and the ending of Endgame?

5.  Could you explain the symbolic / significant meaning of pros on stage? And discuss their relationships with the theme of this play. 

6.  In the stage direction of the beginning of this play, when Clov finished one movement /action, he would have a "brief laugh."  What do you think of these four times of "brief laugh"?  (1931)

7.  Through the following dialogue between Nagg and Nell, could you figure out their major problem which is relevant and important to the theme of Endgame?

Nagg.  … Do you want to go in?

Nell.  Yes.

Nagg.  Then go in (Nell does not move) Why don't you go in?

Nell.  I don't know.  (1937)

8.  Please compare and contrast Waiting for Godot and Endgame.  Or could you find out other Beckett's plays which are relevant to these two major plays?
