Nostalgia

  I did not grow up among paintings.
We had calendars on the kitchen wall
And a portrait of poor Jesus, but I remember
A picture, a calendar above my bed,
October, I suppose, a picture of trees
Turned gold in autumn. I was a schoolboy
Home sick; I stared for hours through
Long afternoons while mother cleaned
Around me or cooked beans and chicken;
I entered it as she listened to the radio's
Romance of Helen Trent. I walked
Myself down a trail littered with gold,
I felt the crispness of cold like you
Feel the crushed ice of daiquiris
Against the tongue. You understand I was
A small boy in south Texas who knew nothing
Of autumn leaves, of winter, or of art.
