OF EARLY CHILDHOOD

Prenote:
This poem says that Wordsworth is no longer experiencing nature in the same ecstatic way that he experienced it as a child. Although his experience of nature in the ecstatic sense was quite peculiar to him (at least as concerned), the head-note to this poem would have us believe that it is a common experience.

Once it was my experience that everything about me was in some way clothed in a heavenly light. It had all the beauty and freshness of a dream. Now it is not as it used to be. No matter where I look, either in day time or in night, I no longer have experiences which I had before.
