- contact linguistics
- electronically mediated / computer-mediated communication (EMC/CMC)
- pragmatics (particularly in EMC and concerning pragmatic variation)
- variational linguistics / sociolinguistics

- language use in internet-based and other electronically-mediated environments
- English in aviation contexts ("Aviation English")
- variational pragmatics (with a focus on naturally-occurring language)
