The 14th Fu Jen Catholic University English Speech Contest (Dec. 13, 2017)
Objectives:
1) To offer a chance for both local and foreign students to exchange cultural ideas through English.
2) To enhance Fu Jen students’ opportunities to practice their English, to help improve their oral expression abilities, and to create a mutual learning environment.

Organizer: English Department
Target Contestants: Fu Jen Catholic University students
Time: 12:50-17:00, Wed., December 13, 2017 (Contestants must arrive LA202 by 12:30 with student ID cards.)
Location: LA202, LA302, College of Foreign Languages

I. Qualifications
A. English as L1 or L2 Students:
1) Fu Jen students (including Continuing Education students, exchange students and foreign students)
2) Those who meet ANY of these criteria: come from an English-speaking country, OR have lived in English-speaking countries for two or more years from age six or above, OR have studied in English-speaking schools for three or more years from age six or above.
B. EFL (English as Foreign Language) Students:
1) Fu Jen students (including Continuing Education students, exchange students and foreign students)
2) Those who DO NOT meet ANY of these criteria: come from an English-speaking country, OR have lived in English-speaking countries for two or more years from age six or above, OR have studied in English-speaking schools for three or more years from age six or above.

II. Rules
1) Speech order: The order of the speeches will be arranged by the English Department. The timetable will be announced the day before the contest.
2) Contestants should arrive at the location early to check the time and order. When signing in, contestants’ student ID cards should be ready for verification.
Part I
Prepared Speech (No script is allowed)
Speech Topic: What Is An Artist?
Three minutes for the prepared speech, and no points will be deducted if the speech is fifteen seconds longer or shorter than these prescribed times.
The bell will ring at 2 min. 30 sec. as a reminder, and will ring again at 3 min. as a reminder of closure. A speech length falling between 2 min. 45 sec. and 3 min. 15 sec. will not be penalized; however, beyond this range (longer or shorter), one point will be deducted. Those who exceed 3 mins 30 sec. will not be allowed to continue delivering their speech.

Part II
Impromptu Speech

Only those ranked in the top four in L1/L2 group and top eight in EFL group in part I can join the impromptu speech. The topic will be decided by drawing lots ten minutes before this section starts. Contestants will draw the lots in order, and each has ten minutes to prepare the impromptu speech. The second contestant will draw the lot 5 minutes after the first contestant, and so on for the third through sixth contestants.

Two minutes for the impromptu speech and no points will be deducted if the speech is fifteen seconds longer or shorter than these prescribed times.

3) Grading standard:
Content 30%
Accuracy of language 30%
Presence 30%
Time control 10%
When contestants have the same points, the person with the highest score for “Content” will win (if that is the same, too, the highest score for “Accuracy of language,” … and so forth).

4) Contestants should take responsibility regarding copyright and bring a dictionary. Please turn off your phone during the contest. Scripts, reference books (except dictionary), and electronic devices are not allowed when preparing your speech. No scripts are allowed on stage for either part of the contest.

III. Application
1) Maximum contestants: 30
2) Deadline: Wed., November 30, 2016, 4:00 PM (No late applications will be accepted.)
3) Place: English Department Office (LA303)
4) Cost: NT$100 as deposit. Please hand in the deposit money along with the application form to the department secretary, and the money will be returned after the contest.

Please go to the office (LA303) with your student ID card, and hand in the completed form and the deposit money by the deadline.

IV. Prize
The top three in both groups will be awarded a certificate and a cash prize:
1st prize: 8000
2nd prize: 6000
3rd prize: 3500
