A narrow fellow in the grass
Occasionally rides
You May have met him? Did you not
His notice sudden is．
The grass divides as with a comb，	5
A spotted shaft is seen;
And then it closes at your feet
And opens further on．
He likes a boggy acre，
A floor too cool for corn，	10
Yet when a boy, and barefoot
I more than once, at noon
Have passed, l thought, a whip lash
Unbraiding in the sun,-
when stooping to secure it，	15

Several of nature's people
I know, and they know met
I feel for them a transport
Of cordiality	20
But never met this fellow，
Attended or alone，

Analysis

這首詩談的仍然是人與自然的關係。儘管蛇一向被認為人類的敵
人，但依詩人的看法，兩者之間的關係實際上相當微妙一力面
人對它可能有極端的好感(a transport of cordiality)，可是另
一方面也可能對他使相當的畏忌(a tighter breathing/And zero
at the bone)。而這兩者感情的強弱消長，似乎端視人與蛇之間
而定;也就是說，以旁觀者若即若離的眼光看蛇，他的體態既
美妙又輕盈(講注意前四段意象之美，與音韻一氣呵成的效果)，但
問的距離縮小至某一程度，便往往會導致兩項後果:一、蛇驚
慌而逃(與J.328之小烏情形相同);二、人倉皇失措。當然，詩
人處理這兩者之間並非絕對視之為水火不相容約兩個極端，也就是
說；兩者之間並非真的壁壘分明。前四段寫蛇的美，但也同時滲進若干神秘
的成份，令人有「見首不見尾」的感覺(And then it closes at
your feet/And opens further on; When, stooping to secure
it/ It wrinkled, and was gone)，也就是說，蛇這種美是可望而
不可及的。同理，當詩中人在最後一段邂逅蛇而感到傖惶失措時，詩
人的筆觸是清描淡寫的，她的語詢是幽默的見到蛇的感受是一陣
氣促與骨冷。
