Because l could not stop for Death

He kindly stopped for me;

The carriage held but Just ourselves

And Immortality

We slowly drove, he knew no haste，

My labor, and my leisure too

For his civility，

We passed the school, when children strove

At recess, in the ring;

The dews drew quivering and chill，

上對比一天還要短。

這是一首描寫死亡是什麼的詩。表面上作者只在描述一天的
行程，我坐上死亡先生駕駛的馬車往前行馳，路過學校，田野，夕
巧，最後到達一座彷若墳墓的房屋。從象徵的意義上看來，這個彷彿
走征象徵著人的一生叫school象徵童年生活，gazing grain成年生
活，setting sun老年生活;最後到達的是那座形同墳墓的房屋。意
指死亡，亦即人生的最終歸宿。最後一節使全意更形複雜而豐富。全
詩的主要意義彷彿是詩人感嘆生命的短暫與死亡的桓久無邊。全詩便
人對死與永生有一種無限迷憫的感覺。
