The grass so little has to do，一
A sphere of simple green，
With only butterflies to brood，
And bees to entertain
And stir all day to pretty tunes	5
The breezes fetch along，
And hold the sunshine in its lap
And bow to everything;
And thread the dews all night, like pearls，
And make itself so fine，	10
A duchess were too common
For such a noticing
And even when it does, to pass
In odors so divine
Like lowly spices lain to sleep，	15
Or spikenards perishing．
And then in sovereign barns to dwell
And dream the day away，
The grass so little has to do，

Analysis

這首詩的推理方式頗為特殊。第一句開宗明義，說明草無所事事
，乍看之下這項聲明似乎否定了草的價值，但詩人接看做了解釋，試
圖闡明這一行模稜兩可的論調。不過Dickinson在說明的過程當中
，並非真正應用嚴格的說理。事實上，她應用的是意象的推展，並間
接迸過意象而將草的各種特性一一播出，草是純樸的，招待的也無非
是蜂蝶之類，草迎風馭動，並向萬物低頭;可是相反的，草也有它尊貴
之處，因為它膝上坐的是太陽，而夜哀把露珠穿成串珍珠，貴婦與
它相形之下竟顯得庸俗，就連死的時候，它也會散發異香，並在穀倉
中渡過他的太平日子。在整組的意象中，我們可以看出草具有雙重性
甘:草既低賤又高貴，既無所妄事又消遙自在，而生前既如此，死後
