康明思的作品大致可分成兩大類，即抒情詩和諷刺詩。本詩便是諷刺詩的一個絕好佳例。詩人借看一值演講者的口，大放厥詞，從美國的國歌"The Star-Spangled Banner"中，隨心所欲地東引半句，西取一行，拼拼湊湊，堆聚而成，令人讀來，只覺無頭無尾，啼笑皆非。其實，這正是康明思的用意; 他就是要嘲諷那些講話言不由衷，口號標語滿天飛的政客。在七、八兩行中更一口氣喊出五樣不登大雅的粗話，氣勢磅礡，咄咄逼人，聞其聲，見其人，一副粗俗的狂態。最後說完，渴了一口水。
