The Canonization

For God’s sake hold your tongue, and let me love,
Or chide my palsy, or my gout,
My five gray hairs, or ruined fortune, flout,
With wealth your state, your mind with arts improve,
Take you a course, get you a place	5

Or the King’s real, or his stamped face
Contemplate; what you will, approve,

When did the heats which my veins fill

Call us what you will, we are made such by love;

標題	Canonization 此處詩中人自認以世俗的觀點看，他們的愛情或有「不務正業」之嫌，但只要他們相互誠摯不渝，捨棄世間榮華，並結合為一體，他們終有成聖的一日。Canonization，封聖，天主教會冊封卓越之教徒為聖徒，其過程類似法院的審訊，教會自動替準聖徒辯護，但另有類似檢察官的人在庭上主張不予冊封，通稱之為魔鬼的辯護人，準聖徒的行為經過一番審查之後，若合乎若干條件方得正式成為聖徒，本詩中男女兩人的愛情終能提昇至宗教的水準，所經歷的過程亦如冊封的程序。
1	For God’s sake 看上帝份上。 Hold your tongue 閉嘴。詩中人慷慨激昂，要求外人不要多管閒事，而妨礙他們的愛情。
2	Or 再不（…也好）。 Chide 苛責，批評。 Palsy 中風。 Gout 痛風。詩中人認為外人可以批評他健康，但無權過問他的愛情。弦外之音似為；他的健康別人無權置啄，而他們的愛情更不用說了。
3	My…flout flout為此行之動詞，其受詞為five gray hairs與ruined fortune. flout：嘲弄。 five gray hairs 五根灰白的髮，象徵年老。 ruined fortune 葬送了的前程。依J. B. Leishman的看法，此時可能作於Donne婚後，影射他與Ann More的結合毀了他一生致仕的美夢。
4	With…improve 按散文的句法，應作Improve your state with wealth, your mind with arts. Donne的語法可能受拉丁文影響。此句意為：以財富提高你的地位，以藝術培養你的心智。
5	Take you a course ＝Take a course of action for yourself. 循特定的方向而奮發振作。
6	ovserve 聽命於，納寵於；觀察。 his honor 他（專指貴人，his honor為對法官與市長之尊稱）。 his grace 他（同樣專指貴人，his grace為對公爵與大主教之尊稱）。
7	the king’s real ＝the real king，國王本人。另亦為西班牙錢幣之一種。 his stamped face 錢幣，因釴幣上常有國王之鑄像。
8	Contemplate 沉思，此處指一心一意，念念不忘。Contemplate 之受詞為前行之the king’s real及his stamped face. approve 嘗試。What you will, approve任何你想做的事都可以試試。 So…love So＝If only. 此行與第一行之後半部前後呼應，詩中呼籲對方不要干涉他的愛情。
10	Alas, alas 哎呀，哎呀。詩中人故意以大驚小怪的口吻問誰被他的愛情所傷害。
11	sighs 長吁短嘆。與Petrarchan convention中愛情的發展方式有關，另方動輒被拒，因之只好嘆息訴苦。此處另值得注意的是詩人把情人的世界跟外在的世界打成一片，因此他的嘆息，淚水與灰心都能造成外界的災害。
12	tears 淚，與上註情形相同。 overflowed 淹灌。
13	colds 指他心灰意懶。 a forward spring remove ＝remove a forward spring. Remove：遷移； forward spring：早臨的春天。由於詩人心灰意懶以致於大地再度封涷，而逼使早到的春天遷移至他處。
14	the heats which my vein sill ＝the heats which fill my veins. heats指熱情，vein 指血管，全子句指他滿懷的熱忱。
15	one man 多一個（人名）。 plaguy bill 死於瘟疫的死亡名單。
16	still 更為。
17	litigious 好訟的。 which ＝who，形容litigious men. quarrel move ＝move quarrel，尋　爭吵。
18	Though…love 雖然她與我一廂情願地相親相愛。
19	We…love 我們之所以有今天應歸功於愛情。
20	one ＝one fly. fly：飛蛾，代表朝生暮死，毫無目的的生命，另也象徵強烈的情慾。
21	tapers 細小的蠟燭。 at our own cost die ＝die at our own cost. 既是蛾又是燭，因此導致自我毀滅。當然，按中右世紀的信仰，die也指性交，因此此句亦指他們心甘情願尋求肉體的結合，而擔負一切後果。
22	And …the dove ＝And we find the eagle and the dove in us. Eagle象徵強健，dove象徵纖弱，表示兩人本身蘊藏有強弱兩股力量。另老鷹與鴿子各為鍊金術過程中兩個階段之名稱。
23	phoenix riddle 鳳凰的謎。相傳鳳凰無雌雄之分，傳宗接代的方法頗為獨特；每五百年一度，此隻獨一無二的鳳凰自投烈火中，經焚化後，灰燼中自有一隻雛鳳凰昇起，代表新生的一代。鳳凰利用此一方式代代傳，而能生生不息地繁衍下去。
23-27	此五行的中心意象，也是奇喻（conceit），是鳳凰的神話。詩中人引用這個典故描敘愛情，兩者相似之處大致可分下列數點： A. 鳳凰自動投火而亡──情人在顛鸞侄鳳之際也自尋毀滅。 B. 鳳凰雌雄不分──情人性愛昇華之際幾可合而為一，再無你我之分。 C. 鳳凰自灰燼中復活──情人由於愛而獲得新生命。 D. 鳳凰的存在與再生一種神話──情人的愛超凡脫俗非一般人的愛可以比擬，並將受到冊封。
23-24	…hath more wit / By us 應驗在我們身上更有意義。 wit：sense.
24	we two being one 性愛昇華之際，男女合而為一。 it ＝phoenix.
25	neutral 中性，指男女揉合而成中性，正如鳳凰之雌雄不辨。
26	rise 復活。 the same （與生前）同一個模樣。 prove 證實。 mysterious 神秘（有如傳奇中的鳳凰）。

29	unfit 不適合。 hearse ( ±) 棺架。
29-30	And if…/ Our legend be ＝If our legend be unfit for tombs and hearse. 假使我們的傳奇（愛情）不配享有墓塋及棺架（享受一般人死後的衰榮）。
31	chronicle 編年史。全行指；假使所作所為不配列入歷史記載。
32	sonnets 泛指情詩，不僅限於十四行詩。 rooms 指詩歌的小室，表示情人願葬於詩行間。 in with. 以…為材料。
33	As well 實應接次行ashes之後。兩行大意為：一個精緻的骨罈能容納偉人的骨灰，不遜一片半畝大的墓園。 Well-wrought urn wrought為work之過去分詞，指精工製成的骨灰罈。 becomes 合適。

40	the world’s soul contract 將全世界的靈魂（精華）加以壓縮。 drove 驅使，此處專指壓縮。此一動詞之受詞為四十四行之countries, towns, courts. 全段落之大意為：將人間的一切景物，壓縮而放進你的眼球（也就是將大千世界容納於小千世界裏）。
