Late 19th Century Vaqueros (Mexican Cowboys)
The original cowboys (vaqueros) were Mexican Indians who were enslaved by Spanish conquerors to work tending herds on their "rancheros." They wore broad sombreros to protect them from the burning sun and chaparjos (chaps) to protect their legs against cactus and mesquite.
