Attached is the reading for our Lit Study Group meeting on 10/8. It's a
chapter from Alan Trachtenberg's Shades of Hiawatha: Staging Indians, Making
Americans, 1880-1930
. I'll be focusing on the "spectacular" qualities of
Longfellow's 1855 poem Hiawatha, how the poem fueled a rage
for Indian spectacles in the early twentieth century, and how--in Trachtenberg's
argument--this phenonomenon related to American preooccupations with
citizenship and immigration. I'll also try to explain how all this this relates
to my work-in-progress on Cather's My Antonia (1918), a novel about
Czech immigrants in Nebraska that I'm examining in the context of the
Hiawatha revival.
